We recommend our HSS 6542 (M2) premium grade. While our standard HSS 4241 bit is excellent for softwoods, the hardness and density of most hardwoods generates significant friction heat which can cause the temper of lower grade steel to become compromised (softening the bit). With superior red hardness, our M2 bits retain their edge ensuring they make their way into each continuous hardwood production run in good nick!
We place utmost importance on this. Each batch of mortising chisels are precision ground on a CNC machining centre so that the four corner chisel edges are perfectly symmetrical. We hold ourselves to a tight tolerance of 0.01mm on the clearance between the inner auger bit and the outer chisel to prevent the bit rubbing against the chisel walls which increases vibration and leads to heat build up. This guarantees a perfectly vertical square hole every time we produce one!
